Yesterday the Love Your Body Campaign at Western Univertsity in London, ON, Canada launched. Set up at the Western Student Recreation Centre (WSRC), the Love Your Body Campaign is getting students think about WHY they are active.
Through activities and speakers the campaign aims to motivate students to move, as exercise is beneficial for both your body and mind. Hope Moir, a 4th year nursing student and the Health and Wellness Coordinator for the University Students’ Council (USC), took the time to talk to me about this amazing week long program.
Christina Relke: What is the Love Your Body Campaign? Who is hosting it?
Hope Moir: Love Your Body is a campaign hosted by the WSRC and the USC this year to promote exercising because you love your body, not hate it. It is a way to promote exercise because of its health benefits and not just to look a certain way. It also allows for discussion on increasing healthy habits as well as when exercise/dieting become a concern.
CR: What are the goals of the program?
HM: The main goal of the program is for people to be mindful of why they are exercising. It brings awareness to the real reasons of just why being active and eating right is so important for both our physical and mental health. It also shows that being healthy is not “one size fits all”. Being fit is not defined by a number but what your body is able to accomplish! It is the feeling of being able to reach a goal, the endorphins or exercise, and taking care of yourself that ultimately define being active. Fitness is so subjective to each person, and my personal goal is that people who walk through the WSRC this week are able to begin to see why they are there and see the ample benefits outside of aesthetics that their workout will have. I also hope that people feel encouraged to move in the way they most enjoy and not just following a routine to get that 6 pack.
CR: What are the activities planned throughout the week?
HM: There are several activities lined up for the week. Each day there will be opportunities for photos and small activities in the Atrium of the WSRC. There will also be several fitness classes running specifically for the campaign which include: Monday Sculpt and Sweat Studio 1 2-3pm, Tuesday Tabata Studio 1 2-3 pm, Thursday Spin 3-4 pm and Friday Yoga 11-12 pm Studio 2. There will also be a speaker and activity to follow n Wednesday from 1-330 in the Second Floor Classroom of the WSRC. Finally, there will be a social media challenge each day with the opportunity to win some awesome prizes!
